Roughly since World War I, the United States has been at war with some other country. Some people would say that these wars have been justified, however, most would likely agree that they were fought simply because they were in the interest of those in power. Because of the shaky reasons to go to war, there have been many people who have objected to these wars. The United States has never accepted these war resisters and has had many of them jailed for refusing to take part in or speaking out about whichever war is at hand. The current war in Iraq has caused many outcries from the North American public as well as internationally. Many Europeans have spoken out against the war in Iraq which has been touted by many as illegal, one being journalist Mike Marqusee who is quoted as saying, "and we in the European peace movement want to do whatever we can to strengthen American voices of dissent"(Kaplan 2003: 16).
